The Winston-Salem Foundation is among the oldest community foundations in the United States and the oldest foundation of any kind in North Carolina. Since 1919, when it was founded with a $1,000 contribution by Colonel Francis Fries, The Foundation has been faithfully serving the needs of the residents of Forsyth County and, more recently, surrounding counties. Today, our assets have grown to $300 million, and we are consistently ranked among the top 40 largest community foundations in the country.
